Dhoni's absence meant the wicketkeeping responsibilities were taken over by Dinesh Karthik, who has not featured in India's plan since the Test series in Sri Lanka last summer, where he performed poorly behind and in front of the stumps.
For New Zealand, Jeetan Patel has replaced the disappointing Kyle Mills. Napier has been a happy hunting ground for Patel, who took a Test best 5 for 110 against West Indies in December. The pairing of Patel and Vettori has traditionally worked well for New Zealand and they'll need to produce something special to stop India's vaunted batting order. Daniel Flynn failed to pass a fitness test on a bruised hand and was replaced by Jamie How at No. 3.
